Amazon's Smartphone Gets Its First Spy Shots Along With Rumored Specs

Amazon's smartphone leaks are starting to pile up quickly, and today our own report about some of its 3D features and Android-based FireOS operating system was followed quickly by an extensive report about the phone's supposed specs, complete with pics of the gadget housed in a case designed to keep its final look a secret.

The pics and specs come from BGR, which reports that Amazon is working on not one but two smartphones, with a higher-end version featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM to debut soon. It'll have a 4.7-inch screen, apparently, and a 720p display that falls just short of the full HD screens on flagship Android hardware like the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

Amazon is building six cameras into its first smartphone, BGR says, with a 13-megapixel rear one for stills and video, as well as a front-facing one for use with video calls and Mayday, and four IR cameras used to track face and eye position, which is then used to inform changes in the position of user interface elements for 3D effects. Our own sources say that the phone tracks only head movement, however, and that Amazon doesn't use eye tracking at all to create the effect.

The 3D features can be used to how users different surfaces of 3D product images according to BGR, and the company is working with third-party devs to help them build software that also takes advantage of the 3D interface effects available to the device.

Photos obtained by BGR as shown reveal a device that unsurprisingly looks like just about any smartphone that currently exists out there, but with five cameras clearly visible on the top and bottom bezels of the hardware. The name of the phone isn't yet known, according to any current reports, but I'd expect Fire to figure into it somehow given Amazon's use of the branding in its new Fire TV media streamer, as well as in the Kindle Fire line of tablets.
